Photo Editing Terms
A comprehensive glossary of essential photo editing terminology and concepts.
Aperture
The opening in a lens through which light passes. Measured in f-stops (f/1.4, f/2.8, etc.). Lower f-numbers mean larger apertures and more light.
Bokeh
The aesthetic quality of the blur in out-of-focus areas of an image, typically created by using a wide aperture (small f-number).
Chromatic Aberration
Color fringing that occurs when a lens fails to focus all colors to the same point. Often appears as purple or green edges on high-contrast areas.
DPI (Dots Per Inch)
A measure of printing resolution. 300 DPI is standard for high-quality prints. Not to be confused with PPI (pixels per inch) for digital displays.
EXIF Data
Metadata embedded in image files containing camera settings (shutter speed, aperture, ISO), date/time, and sometimes GPS location data.
F-Stop
The ratio of lens focal length to aperture diameter. Each full stop change (f/2.8 to f/4) halves or doubles light entering the camera.
Gamma
The relationship between pixel values and brightness. Gamma correction ensures images display correctly across different devices and color spaces.
Histogram
A graph showing the distribution of tones in an image, from pure black (left) to pure white (right). Essential for evaluating exposure.
ISO Sensitivity
Camera sensor’s sensitivity to light. Higher ISO allows shooting in darker conditions but introduces more digital noise. Base ISO is typically 100.
JPEG (JPG)
Lossy compressed image format ideal for photographs. Small file sizes but loses quality with each edit/save. Uses 24-bit color (16.7M colors).
Kelvin
Unit measuring color temperature. Lower values (2000-4000K) are warm/orange, higher values (5500-9000K) are cool/blue. Daylight is ~5500K.
LUT (Lookup Table)
A mathematical formula that transforms colors in an image. Used for consistent color grading across photos or video footage.
Metadata
Information about an image file including EXIF data, color profile, copyright, keywords, and editing history. Stored within the file itself.
Noise
Random variation of brightness or color in images, appearing as grain. More common at high ISO settings or in underexposed areas.
Opacity
The degree to which a layer blocks layers beneath it. 100% is fully opaque, 0% is fully transparent. Essential for compositing and blending.
PPI (Pixels Per Inch)
Pixel density for digital displays. Higher PPI means sharper images. Most screens are 72-96 PPI; Retina displays are 220-300+ PPI.
RAW Format
Uncompressed sensor data from a camera. Contains more information than JPEG, allowing greater editing flexibility but requiring larger storage.
Saturation
The intensity or purity of color. Higher saturation means more vivid colors; lower saturation approaches grayscale. Adjust carefully to avoid unnatural looks.
TIFF (Tagged Image File Format)
Lossless format supporting layers and 16-bit color. Large file sizes but no quality loss. Preferred for archival and print workflows.
Vignette
Darkening or lightening of image corners/edges. Can be a lens defect or creative effect to draw attention to the center of an image.
White Balance
Adjustment compensating for different color temperatures of light sources. Ensures whites appear neutral. Measured in Kelvin (K).
XMP (Extensible Metadata Platform)
Adobe’s standard for storing metadata. XMP sidecar files contain non-destructive edit instructions for RAW files in Lightroom and Camera Raw.
