When a browser tool is enough

A free tool is the right instrument when you can see the whole edit and judge it yourself. A studio is the right instrument when the file has to match a set, or when the edge is the product.

Use a tool

Crop a social frame. Compress a JPG before it goes on a page. Convert a PNG to WebP. Check whether a file has enough pixels for a 300 DPI print. Lift a faded scan enough to read it. Clear a plain white background from a simple product. All of that can finish in the browser, and the image does not need to leave the computer.

Send a quote

Send a quote when the edge is hair, fur, glass, or a garment on a form. Send one when fifty frames must share a margin, a shadow direction, and a file name. Send one when a ring has to survive a zoom. Those jobs fail quietly if they are rushed through an automatic pass: the thumbnail looks fine and the full file does not.

A useful test

Open the file at 100%. If you can point at the pixels you want changed, a tool may be enough. If you are describing a standard for a catalog, write the quote. The tools stay available either way. They are not a lesser version of the studio. They are the other half of the lab.
